Setup Guide
MAXIMIZING YOUR E-BIKE EXPERIENCE
Our four-step manual offers insights into mastering the fundamentals of owning an electric bike.Prior to embarking on your maiden voyage, it's crucial to configure your new electric bike correctly. Discover essential pre-ride inspections to guarantee optimal performance on every journey! Following that, we provide guidance on effectively cleaning your electric bike and maintaining its drivetrain. Lastly, we explore methods for caring for your battery to optimize both range and longevity.
1. GETTING STARTED
JUST TAKEN DELIVERY OF YOUR NEW EBIKE?We know you are excited, but it's important to get the bike set up ahead of that first ride. We deliver all of our bikes built, but you'll need to adjust the handlebars, saddle & put some pedals on. Here we talk you through the first steps of eBike ownership. By following these steps closely you'll ensure you are getting the most out of your new electric bike and learn some tips along the way! The first few steps apply to all of our bikes. This is followed by suspension setup guides, these are only applicable to our electric mountain bikes.
Setup Handlebars
Important: Before aligning the handlebars to your preferred angle, make sure the stem is in line with the front wheel and tightened using the 2 x Allen key bolts on the side of the stem.
Now proceed to adjust the angle of the handlebars and lever position. This is personal preference to each individual rider.
Fitting Pedals
You'll be fitting your desired pedals to your new eBike. They are always labelled left & right (a small stamp on the end of the pedal thread itself). The 'Right' pedal is always the side with the chain on the bike.
For standard flat pedals follow the first half of the video. Proceed to watch the rest if fitting & setting up clip in pedals.
Setting up suspension
The below applies to our electric mountain bikes. For hard tail bikes without rear suspension, you just need to follow the first step.
For full suspension bikes you need to follow both videos for both front forks and rear shock. Please use a shock pump.
Front Forks
The air chamber cap is only set on one leg of the forks, not both sides. It's normally located on the left side. Sit on the bike with your weight completely off the ground.
Now measure the amount the fork sags & adjust accordingly. Put more pressure in to harden & let some out to soften.
Rear Shock
Sit on the bike and make sure all weight is off the ground. Now measure the amount the shock sags, there is normally a handy 'O ring' to help measure.
Now adjust accordingly, put more pressure in to harden & let some out to soften. Aim for approx 20% sag.
It's important to take the shock pump out with you on your first ride. This means that you can adjust the shock and forks further depending on your preference and riding style. It will make a great different to the performance and handling of the bike when set up properly.
2. PRE RIDE CHECKS
IT'S IMPORTANT TO YOUR E-BIKE AHEAD OF EACH RIDE
There's nothing worse than turning up to your local ride spot to find you have a slow puncture from the previous ride that went unnoticed! The following checks will help avoid any mishap, you may learn some useful tips too!
It's also important to make sure you have a few spares to hand for each ride and make sure you take a key for your eBike battery. We'd suggest to always have a pump, multi tool and a spare tube to hand.
- Chain Lubrication: It’s important to clean the drive train after each ride ensuring it's well lubricated ready for the next ride.
- Battery Charging: We recommend to top up your battery after each ride. This helps to keep the battery to optimum efficiency.
- Check Tire Pressure: It’s important to check your tyre pressures. These can vary for different terrain and tyre sizes.
3. CLEANING YOUR EBIKE
KEEP YOUR ELECTRIC BIKE CLEAN
It's important to keep your electric bike clean, it'll lead to a longer service life and ensure your bike is in tip-top condition every time you ride. It's also nice to look after your investment and it'll make for an overall nicer eBike experience. By following this guide you'll learn tips on how to properly clean and de-grease your new eBike. We recommend to clean your bike after each ride or as often as possible where time allows. It's easier to clean bikes straight after riding, rather than leaving the dirt to bake on.- De-grease Drivetrain: By cleaning the drive train first, it'll help not spread the muck onto the rest of the bike during cleaning.
- Remove Battery: Remove the battery ahead of cleaning, this ensure safe practice and allows you to clean the frame underneath.
- Clean Disc Brakes: Disc brakes can fade when soaked with soapy water, always finish cleaning with brake cleaner on the rotors.
Don’t use a jet wash!
This can drive out factory grease in the bearings. If using a high powered hose be careful not to jet water in too close to the hubs, bottom bracket, headset, motor area or anywhere else that is normally greased throughout.
Do use a chain oil!
This keeps it lubricated after cleaning, make sure it isn’t left dry. Some bike shine products can leave a layer of protection over the paintwork, helping keep your eBike looking like new for longer. Be careful not to get this close to any braking surfaces though!
Don't de-grease too much!
It's important when degreasing the chain to not apply too much degreaser around the eBike motor and/or casing. Degreaser is very good at its job. It's also very thin, so spraying loads around the motor area risks pushing the factory grease out of the drive bearings. The same applies around the electric bike headset, suspension pivot bearings and wheel hubs.4. EBIKE BATTERY CARE
HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR ELECTRIC BIKE BATTERY?
The battery is the heart of any eBike. There are certain steps you can take to ensure your electric bike battery serves you well. If you've just had your E-Bike delivered from us, we normally charge the battery between 50-75% before it leaves as we know you’ll be itching to ride it the minute you receive it. If possible, it’s best to charge it fully before the first ride. This helps condition the battery and gives it a start point from which to gauge the rest of its operation.
AFTER EVERY RIDE
After each ride, there are some steps you can take to ensure your eBike battery is ready and in perfect condition for your next outing. We recommend to charge your battery, but don't leave it on charge for consecutive days.
Remove For Cleaning: Always remove the battery prior to cleaning your electric bike, this ensures safe practice.
CHARGE IT UP
Charge The Battery Up: Fully charge the battery after every ride, even after only short distances, this ensures it's always topped up.
Make Sure It's Clipped Back In: Always make sure your battery is fully clipped and locked into the frame to ensure it can never drop out.
NOT IN USE?
If you are not planning to use your eBike for a while, then follow these tips to make sure it's ready when you come back to it. This is only if you're planning on storing your bike for several months or more.
Charging
The battery is charged in the same way as charging your mobile phone, just plug it in. Depending on capacity it will recharge fully in approx. 3 hours. The battery can be re-charged on or off the bike (on some models).
LONG TERM STORAGE
- Remove Battery From Bike: It's best to not leave the battery in your electric bike, this is for both security & keeping the battery in good condition.
- Store At 60% Capacity: Rather than store fully charged or depleted, it's best to store your battery at approx 60% for longer periods.
- Store At Room Temperature: Store the battery at room temperature in a place free from moisture, this will put far less stress on the cells.
